Renewed energy drives new Cincinnati chorus season
by Eric Hunter
Cincinnati-The Cincinnati Men's Chorus returned from a summer trip to the GALA Festival V, an international, quadrennial gathering of over 90 gay and lesbian choruses, with a renewed sense of purpose.
Capitalizing on revived energy and commitment, the chorus has planned its most ambitious season to date.
"It is perhaps to early to tell what the lasting impact of my experience at GALA V will be," said chorus member Tim Butz. "I know I stand a little taller, a little more proud as a result. It's easier for me to come out to
people whose paths cross mine. And I feel a growing need to do more to help in the struggle toward equality."
The Cincinnati Men's Chorus begins its 1996-97 season, “Starstruck," with a fresh commitment to both its artistic and educational purposes. The chorus returns to the Jarson Kaplan Theater to kick off its sixth season on December 6 and 7. They will be joined by local percussion group Drums for Peace in One Light, One World, a celebration of the holidays of world cultures.
New York cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway will make her first Cincinnati appearances on March 5 and 6, 1997 when she
is featured in 's Wonderful, a tribute to the music of George and Ira Gershwin. Callaway is most widely known as the composer and performer of the theme song from the hit TV show The Nanny.
The Cincinnati Men's Chorus joined forces with the Seattle Men's Chorus and the Turtle Creek Chorale, two of the nation's premiere gay choruses, to commission the music for 's Wonderful. Cincinnati composer Terry LaBolt arranged one-third of the music for this concert.
The season will close on June 14 and 15, 1997 at Greaves Auditorium at Northern Kentucky University when the chorus pre-
sents Fantasia and Fairytales, a salute to the music of Disney. Recording artist Bill McKinley teams with the Chorus to deliver the music of Disney in style.
A community chorus comprised of gay and gay supportive men, the Cincinnati Men's Chorus is committed to musical excellence and promoting a positive image of the gay community. In light of current city politics, the chorus' message of acceptance and tolerance is more important than ever.
